Core Curricular Tools and Practices
Our ELA program is grounded in reading and writing workshop and is supported by other literacy instruction, outside of workshop time, focused on reading, writing, speaking, and listening:
- Interactive Read Aloud
- Shared Reading
- Interactive or Shared Writing
- Word Study (examples: phonics, spelling, vocabulary)

What do students learn during Reading and Writing Workshop?
During workshop, students read, write and discuss narrative, opinion/argument, and informational texts. Instruction is organized into units of study, and the main resource is Teachers College Reading and Writing Project Reading and Writing Units of Study (K-8)

A Note About Phonics and Phonemic Awareness
Systematic phonemic awareness and phonics/spelling instruction is provided to our primary level students. Our goal is to support their understanding of the relationship between letters and sounds and to learn how words work when we speak and write. Currently, were are in the process of adopting a program called Wilson Fundations.
