Summer Journey to Learning
GMSS to become bustling Chinese commerce center for summer day camp
Camp for grades 6-12, is one of numerous Gahanna-Jefferson Summer Learning programs
Each day,
June 11-22, 2012, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., the new GJPS Beijing Silk Street Market day-camp program will provide students (in grades 6-12) the opportunity to fully immerse themselves further into the Mandarin Chinese language and culture.
Camp participants must have a minimum of one year of formal Chinese language instruction. The program's name is a nod toward the actual
Silk Street Market [
秀水街] in the city of Beijing.

The Silk Street Market (
pictured) is a popular tourist attraction and shopping center
featuring more than 1,700 vendors across seven floors. Upwards of 50,000
visitors interact and conduct business there daily. However, it can be
an overwhelming environment for those unfamiliar with bargaining or other
Mandarin Chinese language and customs in a real-world setting.
GJPS day camp participants will not have such a jarring experience, but will
have the opportunity to fully immerse themselves in a similar
environment during the two-week camp. Even the traditional lunch will
give way for authentic Chinese cuisine. Transportation is not provided.
