Chapelfield Elementary: A Day at the Arts

On Thursday, October 5, 2017, Chapelfield 4th grade students enjoyed a day celebrating the visual and performing arts.

They visited the Ohio Theater to see the Columbus Symphony Orchestra perform the Young People's Concert and then toured the Columbus Museum of Art. It was a fantastic day! The students were highly engaged and asked when they could go back.

In preparation for the concert, 4th-grade students spent time learning about each of the pieces that would be performed and explored the roles of the conductor, musicians, and audience members. They also learned about concert etiquette, instruments of the orchestra, and some history of the Ohio Theater. The theme for this year's concert was "Words and Notes: Poetry and Music." Students explored how poetry and music can convey similar ideas and feelings. After listening to the musical examples, students wrote their own poems and discussed their creations.

The tour at the Columbus Museum of Art was a great way for students to practice their critical thinking and creativity as they discussed and interpreted works of art. Students were divided into smaller groups and toured the museum with docents. The docents provided a guided learning experience which encouraged students to take a careful look at various pieces of art and describe artistic features, thoughts they may have about a particular artwork, as well as information about the artist and historical background.

Special thanks to the wonderful teachers who arranged and prepared for such an amazing learning opportunity, Tracy Herrmann and Kelly Weber.

Enjoy the video highlighting their special day!
