Students’ winning science projects earn scholarship money

Three students from Eastland-Fairfield’s Bioscience Technologies satellite program at Gahanna’s Clark Hall earned scholarship awards for their winning capstone projects.

Rhea Lanier received $1000 for her first place project, “Inhibition of S. epidermidis using Various Concentrations of Essential Oils for Topical and Medical Use.” Sam Baker placed second, and a $500 scholarship, for his study, “Testing the Retention of Contact Lens Contamination throughout the Proper Cleansing Process” and Jessica Findsen came in third, with her project, “Determining the Efficacy of Essential Oils’ Bacterial Inhibition versus Commercial Deodorant.” She was awarded a $250 scholarship. All are seniors from Gahanna Lincoln High School. The scholarships are courtesy of Cardinal Health.

Students were judged by a variety of community members and industry experts from Central Ohio, including Cardinal Health, The Scotts Company, The Ohio State University, Abbott Nutrition and the Ohio Soybean Council.

The projects were independent experiments thought up by seniors in Kelly Lewis’ Bioscience Technologies class, typically spending 3-6 months on their projects.
