Lincoln Elementary Gym Rats: Why Movement Matters

At Lincoln Elementary School, movement matters and it’s having a direct impact on classroom learning. Gym Rats, the before-school exercise group, promotes living a healthy lifestyle through physical activity and helps channel students’ energy, improving performance and concentration throughout the school day.

Kyle Bentley is the physical education teacher at Lincoln Elementary and a certified level 1 CrossFit trainer. Last year, Bentley reinvigorated the program after launching it initially nearly five years ago.

“Physical activity is proven to improve cognitive activities. Students perform better in the classroom when they are more focused,” said Bentley. “Participating in Gym Rats will allow the students to get the exercise and focus they need throughout the rest of the day.”

Gym Rats started as a morning exercise group for students who scored low in reading and math in an effort to support more focused learning. It has since been expanded and is now open to all third, fourth and fifth-grade students. Bentley often talks with students and invites them to participate in Gym Rats by discussing the importance of the exercise program.

“My favorite part about Gym Rats is seeing the students who came into the program not being able to do a push up and how they improve over time,” said Bentley. “It’s really cool to witness their self-esteem and self-confidence rise because of their ability to do certain exercises.”

Gym Rats takes place every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. The sessions last about a half hour and consist of stretching and CrossFit-inspired exercises. Friday is known as Free Day or Fun Day Friday where students can play a game centered around physical activity.

Bentley’s goal is to have up to 100 kids in the program, resulting in even more students gaining the focus, confidence, and attentiveness that will help them succeed in the classroom and beyond.

Gym Rats is an innovative program that embodies the overall mission of Gahanna-Jefferson Public Schools to inspire, nurture and empower all students to love learning.

“Teachers always want to see their students succeed and I believe teaching students to love exercise will help them succeed,” said Bentley.
