Q&A with New Royal Manor Principal Alissa Lopez

There is a new face at the Royal Manor principal’s office and she is looking forward to a great year ahead in what she describes as her dream job.

Meet Alissa Lopez

What was your previous role before becoming principal of Royal Manor?
I was an English Learner specialist for six years, and prior to that I was a Language Arts and Social Studies classroom teacher. For the past three years, I was the PreK - 8th grade Journey to Learning coordinator for Gahanna-Jefferson Public Schools.

I also spent time as an adjunct professor at Ohio Dominican University, teaching courses to current teachers.

What drove you to apply?
The staff at Royal Manor has a reputation for being top-notch and pouring their hearts into their work with students. Knowing that we share many of the same philosophies, I knew Royal Manor would feel like home to me.

What do you hope to bring to the role?
I hope to bring leadership filled with empathy and compassion that ultimately fosters strong relationships between students, staff, families and the community. With those relationships established, we can set our sights on high-quality learning and achievement.

How have your first few weeks been as principal?
As expected, it’s been non-stop from the beginning! It has been exciting helping our students and parents transition into this new school year. I was able to spend time in classrooms seeing how teachers and students are already creating a safe, productive environment for learning.

What goals do you have for the year for Royal Manor? Any changes you would like to make?
I will continue to strengthen the family culture among staff and students. Also, it is a goal of mine to bring an even greater sense of pride to our Royal Manor students. I want all students to feel proud of who they are and what they can accomplish.

Additionally, I look forward to tapping into our staff's curricular expertise while also supporting and encouraging teachers through professional development.

Why do you enjoy working for Gahanna Jefferson Public Schools?
I have always been impressed with how much of a leader Gahanna is when it comes to new initiatives. We are often ahead of the game in implementing the most current best practices in order to ensure we are doing what is right for kids.

Equally as important, I highly value the diversity of Gahanna. I enjoy seeing how students from many different backgrounds can learn from each other, which ultimately prepares them to be successful in life.

What is one thing you want students and parents to know about you?
I am passionate about helping kids, and I will fight for what is right for them, always.

Any fun facts about you we should know?
At home, my family and I speak mostly Spanish together. One of my favorite things to do with my family is to experience the food, music and traditions of all cultures.

I love sports and have coached basketball, volleyball and lacrosse at the middle school and high school levels. I also am a graduate of The Ohio State University and am an avid Buckeye fan!
