Email Update October 18, 2021
To our GJPS school community, Guidance on managing COVID-19 within our schools is updated regularly and is impacted both by Ohio law and public health recommendations. Our focus has been on keeping students in school, in-person, five days each week, and we remain committed to that goal while also following any applicable laws and maintaining rigorous health and safety practices. A new Ohio law (Ohio House Bill 244) recently took effect and requires both vaccinated and unvaccinated students to be treated equally with regard to close contacts, quarantines and school activities. Franklin County Public Health (FCPH) has modified its recommendations to align with this law, and GJPS now is required to revise notification information as follows:
In addition, it is recommended that direct contacts test for COVID-19 on day five or after following exposure. Our masking requirements for students remain in place, regardless of vaccination status. Additionally, parents/guardians of students experiencing symptoms outlined in the child participation algorithm should keep their students home. Building principals and teachers will do all they can to support families who must keep kids home for quarantine. Our work to carefully monitor positive cases and understand spread in our schools will continue. Our COVID-19 Task Force will watch our district data closely and have ongoing conversations about the best next steps for our students. We understand this is complicated and creates burdens for families, and our school nursing team will support our families through this process as we are able. Sincerely, Steve Barrett Superintendent Gahanna-Jefferson Public Schools
