Summer COVID-19 Protocol

Maintaining a healthy, safe learning environment remains our priority. We are grateful to all of you for your support and cooperation during the past year of the pandemic. Working together, our students, teachers, staff and families helped minimize the impact of COVID-19 on our district.

As we look ahead, Ohio and local governments have begun to lift health orders, and the CDC is adjusting its guidance on COVID-19-related protocols to reflect reduced cases and widespread vaccination efforts. While vaccinations have benefitted our pandemic response, children under 12 are not yet approved for vaccination, and schools must continue to be vigilant in our work to prevent the COVID-19 virus.

Our intention, unless required by health order or law, is for GJPS to operate the 2021-22 school year without masks, social distancing or other COVID-19 restrictions or protocols.

The summer school measures below will help us achieve this goal. Effective June 1, 2021:

  •  Facial coverings must still be worn in classrooms and on school transportation vehicles during summer school and all indoor school activities.

At this time, many of our students (and all of our younger students) remain unvaccinated, and mask wearing has been an important factor in our remarkable success to prevent in-school spread thus far.

In addition, we want to decrease the possibility that students will miss days because of quarantine requirements (which remain in place) related to unmasked exposures.

Summer school sessions are just four weeks long, and a quarantine would negatively impact a student’s ability to complete the session.
  • Outdoors on school property, facial coverings are encouraged, but not required, at school-related activities or events, unless otherwise enacted by a health order or by law.

Note that in a case of outdoor positive COVID contact, quarantine requirements for students remain in effect.
  • No student, teacher, staff member or visitor shall be asked to involuntarily disclose their vaccination status for any reason.
  • Anyone wishing to continue wearing masks for their individual comfort may do so as needed. No student, teacher, staff member or visitor will be subject to discrimination, ridicule, or questioning for electing to voluntarily wear a facial covering on school property, at any school activity or event or while traveling daily to and from school.

Our team will continue to monitor the COVID-19 situation over the summer months. As needed, we will update you with any changes or new information regarding our plans.
