The One-Room Schoolhouse, which was originally constructed in the 1800s and then moved and reconstructed in 2013, has recently been moved to its new location still on Havens Corners Road.

Recently, the One-Room Schoolhouse was put on a lift that carried it approximately 100 yards to its new location. This move will allow the building to continue to be showcased on the same property, but creates space needed as we continue construction on the new Gahanna Lincoln High School.

“We are proud to have been able to keep the One-Room Schoolhouse intact and move it to its permanent location as we build our new high school,” Gahanna-Jefferson Public Schools Chief Operating Officer Cliff Hetzel said. “The building can continue to serve as a great symbol of our community’s wonderful history.”

The One-Room Schoolhouse was originally constructed around 1869 on land in front of the Gahanna YMCA on Route 62. The building operated as a school until 1927, when it was converted into a garage. It was a garage for nearly 100 years until Tom Gregory, a Lincoln High School teacher, and his students discovered it was once a one-room schoolhouse and began work to preserve it. Once the City of Gahanna purchased the property that the building was on, Gregory, his students and the general community raised money to move and restore the historic schoolhouse.

After being disassembled piece by piece, the One-Room Schoolhouse was finally reconstructed and dedicated in 2013 on the property just next to the high school. In the years since, the site has been visited by third graders across our District as they learn about local history. Retired Gahanna teachers serve as school marms and historical figures when the third graders take their day-long field trip. Community groups and alums have also toured and visited the building, which has been furnished with items from the late 1800s-early 1900s.

For the most recent move, all of the historical items from inside the building were moved into a storage container on site. Once the foundation is set, the building will be placed and electricity will be run to the schoolhouse. Then the memorabilia will be put back into the building and Gregory will be excited to welcome guests back to tour the historic building.

“I graduated from Gahanna and have been here practically my whole life. I’ve seen a lot of the school history and it’s important for our students to see and understand the importance of this history,” Gregory said. “Especially with this brand new state of the art high school being constructed, it is important for students to understand where our school district’s history began. The whole point of this project is for students to see that the people who came before them laid the groundwork for all of the opportunities they now have. Certainly having the One-Room Schoolhouse on site shows our students, families and community members how much as a district that we value our school history.”
